Without a doubt, the best way to learn is from the mistakes of others, because making your own is often a frustrating, expensive, and painful process. With that in mind, we suggest that the DIY readers head over to Car Craft to check out their reader submissions for "Stupidest Gearhead Stories Yet."
This author must 'fess up to having a similar experience to CC reader Richard Hunt, except that our improvised carburetion experiment was deliberately induced on a Chevrolet S10 pickup receiving a carb rebuild (this was back when we were younger and, well... dumber). The ending was similar, though, except that our engine fire was brought under control before the vehicle burned to the ground. Then there was the time we forgot to remove the clutch fork before pulling a T56 (a complete disaster when dealing with a Valeo pull-type clutch), the instance we put the flexplate on backwards during an engine swap and didn't find out about the mistake until we were a few hours into hooking up the new engine. Other gems? Oh, a few valuable lessons on the merit of removing the negative battery cable before working on a vehicle.
